Tips and advice about earrings

General tips for using earrings:

  • Clean the earrings with, for example, alcohol or Sterilon before putting them in. This helps remove bacteria and prevent infections.
  • Daily check the backings and clasps of the earrings with clean hands to ensure they are securely fastened.
  • Make sure the backings are not too tight against the ear. Insufficient air circulation can cause pressure allergies, which can lead to embedded earrings or wounds that can become infected.
  • Take off the earrings when showering, exercising, and sleeping to protect them and prevent damage. Store them in the jewelry box you receive with your order.
  • Only touch the earring and your ear with clean hands, and regularly care for the ear holes to prevent irritation and inflammation.
  • Be careful with the use of chemicals, such as those in shampoo, hairspray, or pool water. These can affect the earrings and cause skin irritation.

What should I do if an ear piercing is inflamed?

It can happen that an ear piercing becomes inflamed. You can help prevent this by wearing sterile earrings and cleaning them regularly, for example, with Sterilon. Also, make sure not to place the clasp too tightly against the ear, so that sufficient air can reach the piercing.

Make sure you wear earrings made of materials that comply with all guidelines. Our silver earrings are guaranteed to be made of 925 Sterling Silver and are nickel- and cobalt-free, as required by current regulations.

If an ear piercing is inflamed and the inflammation spreads, you develop a fever, or you have doubts about the severity, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

Even ear piercings that have not caused problems for years can suddenly become inflamed. This can happen due to minor damage or exposure to chemicals, such as those in shampoo or pool water.

There is black residue on the earrings, how does that happen?

Silver is a precious metal that can oxidize, which can lead to black discoloration. This is a natural process and is not harmful to the earrings. Because every skin is different, everyone reacts to silver in their own way.

We often get asked if our earrings are real silver. The fact that they turn black is precisely a confirmation that it is real silver.

The black residue is caused by a reaction with sulfur, a substance present in the air and in many products. When silver comes into contact with it, a chemical reaction occurs that forms a black layer. Sulfur can be found in, among other things, perfume, elastic bands, wool, and rubber.

If your earrings have turned black, you can easily polish them with a silver polishing cloth.

Here are some tips to prevent black residue:

    • Remove the earrings during sports or when you perspire a lot.
    • Wait to put on the earrings until you have applied hairspray, perfume, or other cosmetic products.
    • Take off the earrings before swimming or showering.

My (hinged) hoop earrings no longer close!

If your hoop earrings no longer close properly, it's time to readjust them. You can easily do this yourself by very carefully pushing the post of the earring slightly upwards. This requires minimal adjustment and can be done, for example, with the edge of a fingernail. If done correctly, this will have an immediate effect, and the earring will close properly again. If this is not the case, you can gently try again. Still not working after a few attempts? No worries! You can always send the earring to us, and we can repair it for you.

Please note that hoop earrings, especially with daily wear, may need to be readjusted more often. When putting them on, the post can be pushed down slightly, especially since earrings are often made of a soft precious metal like silver.

How to insert Blomdahl hoop earrings?

Some Blomdahl hoop earrings have a delicate, thin clasp that works slightly differently than a standard hoop earring. It is important not to bend the hoops open sideways, as this can deform the hoop and cause it to close less well or not at all.

Gently open the hoop earring by pushing the end slightly downwards, so it comes out of the small eyelet. Then you can calmly insert the hoop through the piercing. To close the hoop earring, bring the end back to the eyelet and gently push it into place. So, the hoop does not need to be pulled apart or bent sideways.

The image shows you step by step how to open, insert, and close the hoop earrings. Take your time, especially with sensitive ears. When you open and close the hoop correctly, its shape remains beautiful, and you can wear the earrings comfortably.
